The excellent Mawpit are back with new single ‘Mum I’m Sorry’. A phrase I’ve said many times over the years, with the most recent during an unfortunate situation involving some yoghurt. The single is the first to come from the trio’s Common Enemy, a debut EP that I am anticipating quite a lot. Primarily because of the singles released last year that established Mawpit as one to keep an ear (or two) on.
Packed with furious guitars and lyrics aplenty, ‘Mum I’m Sorry’ is a serious rush of noise that sticks to the mind as much as it bashes the skull. It also introduces us to Chara, the heroine that Common Enemy follows. Starting off with a drawn-out intro that establishes the need to “take down the bad guys”, the track picks up the pace with an injection of riffage and drums that’s perfectly matches the grittiness of the lyrics. Multiple references call out the bullshit behaviour of politicians and those at the top of the system, laying it out in the open alongside this ferocious instrumental that seeps through the speakers. It’s badass.
Mawpit have done good here. ‘Mum I’m Sorry’ shows them at their most straight forward, as they lean into their Punk roots more than any other song of theirs. It sets the tone for what should be a very passionate set of songs on Common Enemy, and I can’t wait to hear it.
