‘Smoke and Sweets‘ is the fourth release from Scotland’s rock outfit Midnight Ambulance.
Midnight Ambulance is the story of two friends who lost touch but reconnected after years in 2020. When lockdown hit, Fraser (guitar/vocals) and Amelia (drums/vocals) began collaborating on a creative level. This musical collaboration quickly developed into something big. And by June 2020, they had already written more than 70 songs, only via video call. When Amelia returned to Scotland, both able to jam live and in person again, they decided to form Midnight Ambulance.
So far, they have released three studio singles, with ‘Smoke and Sweets’ now being the fourth edition.
And this track really is smoke and sweet. It’s a musical play between soft sweetness that lets you float through a mystical, dark space, interrupted with ominous, looming rock smoke.
The song starts quietly and calmly. A soft drumbeat lingers in the background as mystifying sounds and Amelia’s echoed voice entice you. But before you get too lulled into the pleasing atmosphere, a distorted, aggressive guitar kicks in and breaks that mystical, soothing sound. The guitar remains the constant counterpart to the calming sound. Towards the end, a dark storm breaks in, ending everything in a grand dirty finale.
You don’t really know whether to be excited or scared. Either way, Midnight Ambulance know the magic trick to creating a unique, mysterious atmosphere that immediately draws you in. It’s a dark and powerful sound.
With now four strong singles behind them, they really are a band to watch out for.
