Midnight Housework launch new single ‘Just to be Enough’ // Review

Midnight Housework have returned with new single ‘Just To Be Enough’. It’s the fourth release from the Belfast band and follows up ‘Red Party Cups’, which came out in July. If you like your Alt-Rock to come with hints of Shoegaze and Prog Rock, and something that will not ease up on the drums – this might be for you.

Born from an impromptu jam of a guitar line intended for a different song, ‘Just To Be Enough’ has a rawness that proves it’s best to grab magic when it lands. While we don’t get to hear the full eight minutes of it, the single has all of the impact to make it memorable. Sonically, the song floods the room with its instrumental. Shoegaze-y guitars fill the ears with The War On Drugs-levels of noise, with a clarity that makes it easy to point out the melodies through the chords. Their Math Rock flavour brings additional texture to the mix, which is already crunchy enough from the thunderous drumming.

Vocally, Sean Hogan delivers a heart-aching performance that injects all emotion into the tune. With lyrics detailing the highs and lows of a relationship, it drives home the weight behind the song’s title. The repeated use of it seems to dig deeper into the heart with each listen, making it hard not to feel something.

‘Just To Be Enough’ is a fantastic song that hits hard on many levels. Musically it’s a beast of a listen, and there’s a ton of depth within the lyrics that makes you wish to stick around some more. I hadn’t come across Midnight Housework until this, and now I can’t wait to hear what’s next from them.
