Singer-songwriter Mitski has released her latest single, ‘Bug Like an Angel’, from her upcoming seventh studio album ‘The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We’, which is due to be released on September 15th.
The news was revealed to eager fans through a voice memo recorded at the Bomb Shelter Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, where the album was made. The memo was then sent out to those who subscribed to her newsletter.
The Japanese-American singer prefers to keep her personal life private, but this doesn’t stop her from being incredibly vulnerable in her songwriting.
‘Bug Like an Angel’ is Mitski at her best. The acoustic guitar melody, laced with a rich choral backing, finds comfort in loneliness. The track is self-assured, with the singer sitting in her angst, welcoming it, and turning it into something magical.
A particularly poignant line, ‘Sometimes a drink feels like family’, showcases Mitski’s ever-present musings on dejection, with her various musical styles, from synth-pop to disco, to indie rock, all presenting a similar theme.
In the music video for the single, directed by Noel Paul, a woman collapses outside a bar before she is greeted by a choir featuring Mitski. The woman chooses to reject them and sets off on her own again.
The video works well with the track and has created more excitement amongst fans as to what they can expect from this new era.
