After releasing their debut EP Dogs Fighting in my Dreams back in 2021, Modern Woman has been working on some new material in the background, as they gear up for a busy end of the year for 2022. Well, we’re halfway through the year, and the London-based band have dropped a brand new track ahead of their upcoming shows.
‘Ford’ is the title of the track and is one of the oldest songs in the band’s repertoire as singer and guitarist Sophie Harris told us: “I wrote the bassline loop for it a long time ago, one day when I only had a bass to hand. I structured the song and added guitar and simple vocal”.
The sinister feeling Sophie mentioned really manages to last through the entire song, which is accentuated with its very bare sound, especially early on, as Sophie’s vocals take centre point. There are some really remarkable instrumentals in the track, as it’s not just straight chords being dealt out. There are some nice intricacies with the bassline and guitar, helped by the sometimes-disjointed drums.
The song’s matter is something quite simple, as it tells the tale of a girl borrowing her brother’s for just to drive around. It is impressive to take something quite trivial and turn it into an entire subject of a song. The song is certainly a grower, as I came back a few times to pick up all the lyrics and the story, but now it’s a mainstay on the playlist, and I look forward to what else they can bring in 2022!
