Motel Carnation – ‘Deja Vu (Caught Up)’ / New Single

Motel Carnation are back with their new single ‘Deja Vu (Caught Up)’. The trio’s first release of the year revolves around that one person who does nothing but bring the worst out of you – making any night fun but ultimately full of regret. I’ve got someone like that, where I fall for their charm every time despite the many attempts to resist. Oh, Papa John, I just can’t quit you.

With a topic sure to dive into some dark moments, the new single provides the perfect opportunity to bring the Newcastle band’s upbeat indie-pop and broody indie-rock together. Laced with stomping bass notes and tattered with gritty guitar riffs, this song hits as hard as it grooves. Its intro heads toward a sensual nature with its breathy harmonics and hip-sinking drum beat, setting the tone for things to head downhill as the night draws on. I love the way the volume and fieriness of the guitars increase as the lyrics begin to manipulate the listener, eventually culminating in a glorious display of noise as the protagonist breaks away.

‘Deja Vu (Caught Up)’ is a fantastic song, and easily my favourite from Motel Carnation. The pairing of their sound works really well as a hard-edged, groove-laced instrumental while also doing a great job at telling the story too. I’m pleased to see the band break free from this sense of déjà vu, and I’m looking forward to hearing where they go from here.
