London newcomers and SEO-experts Y have released their debut single “Why”. Comprised of members from Fat White Family, Meatraffle and Pregoblin, this emerging act might be worth a listen. Signed to Hideous Mink Records and SO Recordings, the five-piece have also announced a debut EP. Set to arrive on April 4th.
Y was formed by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation. Soon into their jam sessions, they discovered an unreal synergy between them. One that threw caution to the wind and didn’t give a heck about genres. Birthing a sound that’s been described as “wonk rock”, “Gameboy thrash” and “Egyptian wedding music”. Three things that all sound pretty cool, tbh.
“Why” showcases this freeing mindset with a raucous performance. Saxophones dominate the airwaves, as it replaces lyrical space with frantic notes. Against it, a backdrop of guitars that shred and riff their way through the verses, leaving everything up to interpretation. But this isn’t a traditional instrumental. There are disembodied voices asking why?, but there’s enough vibrancy going on for it to feel like it’s entering your mind and asking you to give the answers. It’s existentialism in its finest form and for me, the answers are “Fascism is back and being pushed by those who control social media”, “I’m a people pleaser that puts the consideration of others before myself” and “Because pizza is nice, and there’s nothing with having it for breakfast, lunch AND dinner.”
This is a debut unlike no other. An introduction to Y, but also a way for them to get to know you, too. “Why” is abrasive, melodic and everything in between. Dancing with little care on top of the description of genres, mashing them together to create something that will stick with us for a long time. Y are ones to watch, and if you find yourself asking why, that is why.
