Pop Vulture return with their first release of the year, ‘Comforting Lie’. Let’s admit it, we all lie to ourselves. I do it all the time. The other day I said that I’m not getting fat, it’s “just the way a certain hoodie sits”. Get your head out of the clouds, man. You chow down 20 tubes of love hearts a week.
As big or small as a lie may seem, the Leeds outfit dissect the way we get ourselves through the day as a way to cope with the big, the small, the existential before falling asleep and starting over again. Backed with dissonant rhythms, groove-ladened percussion and duelling guitars, ‘Comforting Lie’ is a delightful way to be smacked in the face with reality.
Kicking off with some of post-punk’s best, drawn out guitars, Pop Vulture immediately sink into the mind with an intro that’s off-kilter and catchy. Trombones drape themselves over arguing guitars, engaged in an ongoing battle that builds with simmering tension throughout. It makes for some contorted listening, with some pretty sombre moments that collide with little hints of pop that make it somewhat infectious and a joy to listen to.
‘Comforting Lie’ is a superb song. One that calls out the façade we play on ourselves day to day, performed through an instrumental that is somehow catchy in spite of its parts. Pop Vulture have caught our attention, and we truly mean it when we say we hope they come back with another release soon.
