Reilly James & The Summertones are back with a new single ‘All The Things You Said’.
Those who know Reilly James will notice that this song is a bit different than the previous ones. In fact, it’s almost the complete opposite of what we are used of them.
Instead of the typical shiny and happy tunes, ‘All The Things You Said’ is darker and brings some fine moody vibes. Which is a great twist.
Front singer Liam says: “I wanted to write something that was polar-opposite to what I had written before. The previous singles that I have released have been quite bright and upbeat so to write something so dark and moody was a good way to explore with new sounds and textures.”
Well, what can we say? It’s a great new adventure of sounds.
Reilly James originally started out as a solo artist who wasn’t scared to challenge the stereotypical “indie” sound. In the summer of 2021 then, Liam recruited a band to help continue to evolve as an artist and a songwriter.
‘All The Things You Said’ gets you in the first seconds of the calm intro with wonderfully arranged synths and guitar. You dive right into the waves of moody sound.
The song builds up while it progresses. Liam captures you with his great, soft voice that underlines the musical harmony of the track. The ongoing bass is a great rhythmic sound master. It’s a steady, rhythmic beat that brings you right into the moody mood. The bass is the dominant, but still subtle player in the entire song. It’s accompanied by vivid drums, a bonfire-sounding acoustic guitar, and a great electronic guitar riff in the chorus. Altogether the instruments create a wonderful harmony of moodiness.
‘All The Things You Said’ makes you lean back, close your eyes, and think about the endless ups and downs of love. When that someone is still running around in your head, and you can’t escape. Instead, you’re going over it all again and again. ‘Going over all the things she said’ lyrically transports that moody feeling you feel throughout the song.
The song is a mix of all sorts of different influences and was inspired by artists such as The XX, Radiohead, and Billie Eilish.
Liam has a history of producing club tracks, and you can hear that distinctive sound in the song. There’s this bit of indie-electronic sound combined with catchy riffs, drums, and vocals so that it almost sounds tropical.
Reilly James crafted a song with a great unique sound. They take us on a sound adventure to explore the deep moody feels of the mind when love’s cruelty pulls us into the ocean of dark feelings.
Reilly James are taking a different route through the indie scene and have gained support slots with some UK talents like The Snuts, Deco, Thomas Headon, and Sarpa Salpa. We think that’s well-deserved.
Make sure to check them out! We will hear a lot more of them this year.
