Rosie Miles – ‘Pieces of Sky’ / New Single

‘Pieces of Sky’ is the debut single from Rosie Miles, a Leeds songwriter who joins the likes of Sunflower Thieves, Elanor Moss and Kindelan in being featured on the blog. It’s quite nice to get an insight into an area’s music scene, and as shown many times now, Leeds seems to be up there. Loads better than down here in Essex. They seem to like their distortion down here, I find. In venues that charge £4 for a coke. Madness.

Much like the previously mentioned artists, Rosie offers an original sound that’s really well crafted. Blending numerous instruments to produce a song that’s far more composed than it should be for a debut. It is emotive and poetic and given the freedom to explore. The song moves flawlessly between Folk and Jazz to weave soaring melodies and harmonies together delightfully.

Lush walls of guitars collide against soft piano keys and light percussion to create something akin to Lianne La Havas – delicate in nature but full of power. Rosie’s vocals swim between these layers. Directing the song towards its high moments as the lyrics drop realisations along the way. It makes the song feel open to move wherever, with no limitations.

Rosie Miles has introduced herself in a big way. ‘Pieces of Sky’ is a wonderful song that offers something new with each listen and sets the bar high for what’s to come. With news of an EP coming in May, Rosie might be one you keep an ear out for.
