Scrawny – I could learn a thing or two / EP Review

Scrawny started when passionate musician Jesse Dill took a name he was teased with growing up and made it his own. Embracing something initially used against him then became a theme in his music as he champions messages of self-care, self-acceptance and mental wellbeing. These themes shine through in his latest EP I could learn a thing or two, a collection of four soaring indie and alt-pop tracks.

This EP defines a lot of the lessons Jesse Dill has learned growing up, while also admitting that he is still learning and growing. It focuses on the importance of mental health and reassurance that there are no perfect steps to becoming who you are.

“I hope these songs resonate and help someone else that may be going through these same emotions. “I could learn a thing or two” will be a statement I make for the rest of my life. I am always learning and listening.”

Crafting stunning home-made music videos with his friends for each track, Scrawny released them all together to create a short film alongside the EP release.

I could learn thing or two kicks off with similarly titled track ‘A Thing or Two’. The sleek and lively track makes for the perfect opener and sets the listener up for what’s in the store. ‘A Thing or Two’ is followed by the attitude-filled ‘Break Me Down’, this alt-pop offering packs a punch with a bit of sass compared to the surrounding tracks. Scrawny soon contrasts this with the emotive ‘Hollywood’, which resonates as the most impassioned track on the EP.

The EP closes with Scrawny’s latest stratospheric single release ‘Space’, the track sums up what Scrawny is all about, it’s a delectably fun pop tune with a strong personal message at its core.
