Spending Valentine’s Day with STEPHEN SANCHEZ / Gig review

The one thing you immediately notice is how incredibly diverse the Nashville-based singer’s fan base is; from the expected Gen Z following his viral hit Until I Found You to baby boomers and above, the New Century Hall in Manchester was full of excited spectators. It’s safe to say his late 50’s/early 60’s rock and roll.

Sanchez excitedly entered the stage which is the contrast to his opener ballad ‘Something About Her’ which showcased his insane vocal ability and immediately transformed the atmosphere to the 1950’s era. Everything clicked with the flair of his and his band’s appearance, the classic, shiny curtain backdrop and his isolated clean vocals. It was soon followed by fan-favourite, and a key track of the night, ‘Evangeline’.

Stephen narrated a story, conceptual of his latest album Angel Face, in between tracks which gave the show a unique edge. The story he tells is about a man who falls in love with a mob boss’ wife; it concludes to a dark and murderous end. He played his alter ego, Troubador, very well and made the set a real standout.

‘High’ lifted the crowd and evoked a singalong, one that left a lasting impression with the audience as cheers erupted and Sanchez was almost rendered speechless, “Thank you so very much, what a wonderful show this has been”.

His set list also included ‘Be More’, ‘Death of a Troubador’, ‘High’ and even a theme fitting cover of ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’ by Roy Orbison.

Everything about Stephen Sanchez and his craft is unique; yes, the Elvis comparisons are expected, but he is blazing his own trail of creative artistry and musicianship. We can only imagine and look forward to whatever he does next – the talent and creative lead he has is endless.
