SPINN have added to 2021’s flurry of singles with ‘People Should Know Better’, their sixth single of the year.
The track shows a more political side to the Liverpool-based quartet: focusing on themes of political disillusionment, frustration, and anger.
The song’s lyricism unapologetically calls out government failings and society’s misguided morals, putting the group right at the forefront of relevance.
“Let me find some soul asylum/get me off this sordid island” sings the band’s lead singer, Johnny Quinn, who, throughout the tune, expresses outrage at the intolerant views many people have adopted in recent times. The scouser has previously been vocal about his political stand point and makes no secret of here.
While the track showcases particularly partisan themes in its lyricism, ‘People Should Know Better’ slots right in amongst SPINN’s previous singles in terms of its sound. It showcases the kind of high-tempo indie-pop we’ve come to expect from the band. The melodic and effects pedal-drenched guitars evoke The Orielles and form the centrepiece of the track, while Johnny’s Tom Ogden-esque vocal remains slightly hazy throughout, giving the tune a soft musical bed.
This tune is the finishing touch on a good year for the band, who have graced the main stages of the Tramlines and Sound City festivals in recent months, but it also plays its part in setting the scene for a successful 2022: it’s taken, like all of their 2021 singles, from their sophomore album, ‘Outside Of The Blue’, which is due for release in February next year and promises to further the group’s successes.
The band are due to take the new record, which is equated with the teachings of Buddha, on the road next spring.
