Squidge are back with their first single of the year in ‘Sad Sack’. We hadn’t heard from the quartet since ‘Gobby/John’ made the rounds back in 2022, but they return with another dose of high-octane guitars and news of an EP set to land early next year too. Big up.
‘Sad Sack’ is a homage to post-hardcore music as its two and a half minutes is dedicated to throwing all sorts of noise at your face. Equal parts brash and melodic, it features the best of both worlds that’ll get you crooning along while also delivering hammer kicks to your nearest foe. It balances between drawn out choruses and heavy riffage to really keep the energy high and the blood pumping.
Having kept a low profile throughout the year, Squidge have certainly reintroduced themselves in a big way here. ‘Sad Sack’ is a superb song with a sound I hope they continue to explore in future. The inclusion of Hardcore elements adds some extra grit and unpredictability to it, leaving me excited to hear what’s to come.
