The Assist – ‘Television Kid’ / New Single

After the successful release of their track ‘Irrational Movements’ late in 2021, The Assist are back with some brand new material to kick-off 2022. With the announcement of their debut album Council Pop scheduled for release on April 8th, the band have dropped yet another taster of what’s to come in their latest release ‘Television Kid’.

The track has poignant little guitar hook, which is a heavy feature in all of the bands tracks, combined with the ‘kid on the street’ vocals provided by Mikey Stanton. You can hear this throughout The Assist’s development, no matter what stage they’re at, the music still has that common, relatable feel to it. It’s not polished and produced beyond recognition, as it has that odour from the streets.

His heads full of the things he could be/he paints the picture of live from the TV” is the chorus’ key line, and one that still rings in the ear after listening to the track. The song is packed full of these lines painting distinct pictures such as, “You’ve got bills that are months old / you put your rent on a ten fold” being one of my favourites.

The track has some great guitar work on it aswell, with a really fuzzy, sonic-sound, making those little diddy’s sound all the better.

As a big fan of Midlands music scene and knowing/following the band for several years, I was already really looking forward to the album release. But, after hearing two of the leading tracks off the album, you get the feeling this could be a big one for the scene. There’s no band quite like The Assist in the Midlands at the minute, which really separates them from the rest, and with the release of Council Pop on the horizon it could give them the recognition they deserve.
