Sometimes all you want from music is a good time. Nothing that aims to hit too deep or try to evoke something out of you. Just some good music and good vibes (sounds familiar) is all I need. Brighton’s The Big Push released their new EP Can Do, Will Do last month and it is every bit of what I want and more.
The first few seconds of ‘Watch Out’ immediately sets the tone as fast-flowing guitars bring a flurry of riffs to the ears. Noodling their way through the stomping basslines and the steady drums, and with simple hooks for the chorus, it makes for a straight up, balls-to-the-wall listen that hits the hips hard. Kicking things off in a big way.
‘Xbox Marijuana’ follows with a similarly gutsy performance, with hints of The Hives heard in the riffs and group vocals, which bellow out against the summery instrumental. It maintains the frenetic energy that was amassed throughout ‘Watch Out’ and utilises it to create another listen that sums up the carefree attitude of younger times. ‘Mannequin’ slows down the tempo a touch to add a Bluesy flavour to the mix, which allows the band to take time to flesh out certain breakdowns with some proper good, melodic sections. While the song sticks to the booming choruses heard already, it does build upon the foundation, adding some variety to Can Do, Will Do.
Can Do, Will Do is a superb EP from The Big Push. It offers a guaranteed blast of a listen and is easily one of the most fun EPs I’ve heard this year. The music throughout is exciting and while it establishes the formula early on, it does a great job at adding some variation towards the closing half of it. The almost-Gospel sounding interlude on ‘All My Heroes’ is a surprising and yet welcome example of this. Definitely give this a listen.
