The Last Dinner Party have announced their return with ‘This is the Killer Speaking’, alongside confirmation of new album, From The Pyre. Set to arrive on October 17th via Island Records.
Following a mammoth year that saw the launch of their debut album Prelude to Ecstasy, the band quickly became one of the biggest breakthrough acts in the UK – which gave its fair share of praise and negativity – the five-piece have wasted little time ushering in their next phase. ‘This is the Killer Speaking’ may have existed within their setlists for a while, but shows off a more matured sound that breaks away from what we heard on the last album.
With an intro that had us wondering if we were listening to Arctic Monkeys, the song quickly reintroduces us to The Last Dinner Party’s theatrics, complete with all the baroque pop noise that helped them stand out from the crowd. What follows is an all-encompassing listen that expands horizons and fills the ears with a dynamic chorus.
Speaking on From The Pyre, the band say: “This record is a collection of stories, and the concept of album-as-mythos binds them. ‘The Pyre’ itself is an allegorical place in which these tales originate, a place of violence and destruction but also regeneration, passion and light.”
We weren’t expecting to hear from The Last Dinner Party so soon, but ‘This is the Killer Speaking’ makes us wish they never left. It’s a great listen, and looks to justify the hype that surrounded the band last year. They continue to bring something different to the mainstream, and we cannot wait to be astounded by From The Pyre.
