THE NONE – Care EP // New Dead Good Music

London Noise act The None stormed to the forefront with the release of ‘On Automatic‘ a few weeks back, and since then our anticipation – and the ringing in our ears – hasn’t lessened. On their latest EP, CARE, the four-piece cement themselves as a force of nature, and one of the best live bands around.

Where the palm-muted anger of ‘On Automatic’ felt like a slap across the face, CARE is a full-forced boot to the nose. Each member’s style comes together with no limits or filter, resulting in a collision of sound that’s unleashed. It’s DIY, minimalist recording style embraces that pure Punk vibe, and the EP shines because of it.

‘My People’ kicks things off with an intensity that informs us that the front of the EP will be just as hard as its end. Chugging guitars smash themselves against the steely rhythm section to drive home the unabashed feeling the band has. ‘Assembly’ follows with a scatty riff that swings off of the rigid percussion. Bringing some vibrancy to the mix. It’s chorus section rings out with jangly guitars – reminding me of old school Dinosaur Jr. in how well it contrasted against the gutsy riffs.

There are elements of Post-Rock in ‘Rusty Road’, a song that aims to surprise you with its sheer volume by luring you in via meandering melodies. It’s hard to imagine that things could hit a new level of loud, but The None absolutely let loose here.

Care is a fantastic EP. It’s one that makes an impact, and will almost definitely leave a mark. There will be no forgetting about it. It’s an excellent display of creating something that’s abrasive and truly underground, and while it’s a rare move to see something not on the big streaming platforms, the fact that The None have gained a following in spite of that makes it more satisfying.
