The Queen’s Head launch us into ‘Hell’ // Review

‘Hell’ is the new single from The Queen’s Head. Having dropped the glitzy ‘Today’ back in March, the London band return with a second from their upcoming EP, Titanic. The EP is set to arrive on July 8th. Illustrating the two frontmen’s respective relationships to suicide, and exploring the enormity and context that surrounds it, it’s sure to be one of the most challenging records of the year.

Described by the band as Titanic‘s “melodramatic villain number”, ‘Hell’ is a sonic interpretation of male rage. “It’s a pure and evil admission of those desires we try to keep locked in the cupboard” expands Tom Butler. “The desire to control, the desire to harm others, the desire to harm oneself through self-pity, that very male feeling of anger at everything and nothing, at the same time.”

Ominous synths and vocals open the song to create an unsettling atmosphere. Detailing the growing sense of red before letting loose with the five piece’s expansive sound. Taking elements from Post-Punk, Math Rock, Pop and everything in-between, plus influences from the likes of Death Grips, 100gecs and Talking Heads, the instrumental is fitting of its title. Serious grooves are formed via snappy drums, industrial beats and vocals that are looped to build a sense of anxiety throughout. It really does a great job adding tension and urgency to the mix, making it akin to not catching one’s breath. And yet, I really like it.

Alongside ‘Today’, The Queen’s Head have released two singles from a project that could potentially be one of the best of the year. ‘Hell’ is unrelenting, but very catchy. Combining heaviness with accessibility that makes you question why you enjoy it so much, but leaves you no choice but to play it again. It’s an experience like no other, and I can’t wait to hear it fully on Titanic.
