The Wisely Brothers – Think Wisely / EP Review

The Wisely Brothers have released their new EP, Think Wisely. As well as the gift of new music, the Tokyo-based trio will also be performing in the UK for the first time in November. How exciting!

On Think Wisely, The Wisely Brothers offer four songs that revel in their chance to play with the trio’s fun sound. Lead single ‘Two Minutes’ is a joyous listen about receiving good luck courtesy of meeting a friendly spider in the morning. In this innocent nod to Japanese culture, the song flits about with happy backing vocals, noodling guitars, and an upbeat tempo that you cannot help but enjoy. All spiders I encounter in future now will be met with a smile and a high five.

‘Julia’ follows with a near-five minutes of drawn out, chilled guitar chords and a breathy vocal performance that invites you to kick back. Driven by wandering vocal harmonies, the song takes all the time in the world to get to wherever it wants to be. Matched with bluesy melodies – it’s a great song to play on a lazy Sunday. It even has a little rush of chaos at the end to illustrate the “I’ve got work in the morning” panic too.

‘Sonomama’ is a quick little instrumental that offers more noodling sweetness before settling into ‘Purple’. The EP’s closing track is a meandering display of Grunge-like melodies and lo-fi drumming that seems aimless but enjoys being lost. The vocals are buried a little too deep into the mix, but together it produces a listen that fits the easy-going vibe of the EP.

Think Wisely is a solid EP. The Wisely Brothers have created something that’s easy to digest without sacrificing on personality. Each song is accessible from the first listen, and it’s something I could have on loop forever.
