With a headline tour underway next month, as well as a couple appearances at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival, VENUS GRRRLS mark a busy time with “Darla”. Written about the bond between each member, the new single is another defiant tune that really makes us wish for a new EP or album to come out.
Speaking about the new song, vocalist/guitarist Grace Kelly shares, “Darla is a ritual of witchy premonitions that two people were destined to meet. Embodying the sanctity of female companionship, friendship, and love; Darla and her best friend Marceline join a coven together knowing they are better together, becoming two halves of the same whole. It is a direct reflection on the bonds present within the members of VENUS GRRRLS, and how female companionship has been a life force during hardship and change.”
Setting off at a pace similar to what we heard on “Bloodsick”, “Darla” wastes no time getting into your head. Its driven instrumental really highlights the close bond between the band, slipping into its heaviest moments seamlessly, while ensuring the ever-haunting qualities remain. Vocalist GK really lets loose, allowing passion to scream out the lyrics in parts, which is bolstered by the thunderous drums and waves of distorted guitars.
It hits hard and is another reason why you shouldn’t be sleeping on VENUS GRRRLS. I’m really hoping we do get to hear something substantial from them soon. Each single released so far this year has been a banger.
