VENUS GRRRLS are a riot grrrl inspired alternative rock band from Leeds who are releasing their latest single, the seasonally appropriate ‘Hex’ on Halloween this year. So, what can you expect?
‘Hex’ is a track of empowerment, an encouragement to victims of harassment to seek out their power and to reclaim it, to inspire people to call out these harmful behaviour’s, a demand that the perpetrators face legitimate consequences. But most importantly, it’s a song of support.
‘Hex is an ode to womenkind, touching on the universal experience of harassment. In the landscape of Hex, there are consequences for such behaviour, and generates a reality where we take the power back for ourselves. We are scared, and we are frustrated with the tale as old as time; we all have a story when we shouldn’t.’ says GK, the band’s vocalist.
The track has an immediate start, introducing us to this eerie and heavy rock sound and the powerful riot grrrl esque lyrics, “I’m gonna make him feel his sins”. The song is full of strong vocals with this unique element of beauty to them, combined with the backing vocals this creates an almost mystical sound. The band manage to keep this sound without losing their heavy rock energy. This energy is largely borne from the skilled instrument work, the powerful beat carrying through the song whilst the guitar and bass work in a brilliant tandem. Together VENUS GRRRLS manages to stay true to the Riot Grrrl and rock genres and still create a song that’s all together new. This continues to be true throughout the instrumental as the vocals are reintroduced with impressive range. ‘Hex’ is the perfect example of feminine rage manifesting into both art and an empowering support for others.
To top off this release, VENUS GRRRLS is also releasing an official music video to ‘Hex’, it’s the perfect combination of spooky art film and eerie rock music video, so make sure to keep an eye out for this video release too!
