Irish alt-rockers VERA are back with their third single of the year in “Leave Me Alone”. Written about a particular individual who just won’t go away, it’s potentially their most charged and ferocious song to date.
We’ve all dealt with people like that. People who are lingerers and have no appreciation for shutting up for a second. VERA illustrates this overwhelming burden wonderfully with an instrumental that feels as chaotic as its topic. Its relentless collision of synthesisers, drums and guitars is a real attack on the senses, and really works well with Sarah Toner’s exasperated vocals. It really highlights the turmoil that occurs in our heads as it builds and builds.
It’s a downward spiral performed in a way that’s melodic and rooted in groove. The bass tone in particular really stands out, even against the mind-bending synth arpeggiators. The verses lead us into a chorus that rings out with an anthemic sound that slips into the mind easily.
VERA have really made an impact in their debut year. Each of their singles have introduced a bold sound that’s a real blend of styles, directed wonderfully by Sarah’s vocals. “Leave Me Alone” is arguably their biggest yet, and I cannot wait to hear what’s to come from them.
