‘Shoebox’ is the new single from With Sun. The project of singer-songwriter and poet Alice Hale. It’s her first single since collaborating with paulfcook on ‘I Can’t Look Up‘ at the start of the year, and reflects on how a change in perspective can alter the way you feel about things.
Speaking on the new single, Alice says: “I think we become more imaginative when we have less, as long as our basic needs are met: love, shelter, food. Not everyone has those and I’m very fortunate that I do.”
It’s so easy to compare yourself from others, especially in the age of social media where everything is available to be seen. But, as Alice notices, comparison is the thief of joy, and ‘Shoebox’ highlights this wonderfully. It’s Folk-inspired instrumental is filled with soft guitars and horns that exude warmth out of the airwaves. Alice’s vocals sound so delicate but tell a tale of realising what she has is plenty, and couldn’t need anything else.
It’s a simple message but an effective one, and the way it manoeuvres through the numerous instruments makes it so easy to enjoy. ‘Shoebox’ is a sweet tune, and comes with a lot of depth that doesn’t weigh down the light instrumentation. Pleasantly surprised by this one, and I’m looking forward to hearing what Alice does next.
