YNES – ‘Used To Be’ / New Single

Throughout 2020 YNES killed it, whether it was through her poignant music, wildly creative videos or just being an genuine icon on the socials. With 2021 well underway, YNES is picking up from where she left off with her new track ‘Used To Be’.

This is a very special release, not only is it an YNES track BUT it’s the debut release for the brand new Birmingham-Based Record Label GRRRL GROANNN! Which is a label created by the talented duo of Bryony Williams and Indie Midlands – amazing!

The song explores that feeling almost everyone goes through, where you reach an age and you yearn for the things you once had as you realise you’re shedding your youth. It’s a shit feeling to have, and YNES manages to encompass that in this song which is something she does effortlessly. You can hear it on previous releases like ‘Better Job‘ and ‘Sit Down, Grow Up’, the subject matter is directly approached with no tired clichés or dancing around the topic.

Taking some influence from Kate Nash regarding the song’s styling, the song is delivered like YNES is just having a conversation with you – giving it that honest glow. Lyrics like; “I wanna sing old songs / I wanna get real drunk / I wanna add my ex on facebook” and “I wanna waste my potential all over again / when I get the subway in the wrong direction” are relatable as YNES perhaps seems to draw on personal experiences. Although the delivery is similar to Kate Nash on this one, the musicality is much heavier with the short choppy guitars in between delivering slick hooks just embellishes the song that bit further.

So glad to hear that YNES is back at it again, and finally with live shows becoming a thing again it will be great to hear all of her hard work and creativity come to life on stage!

Luckily YNES is playing her next show in Birmingham with support from the amazing Graywave and KiDDPiNK, so if make sure you cop some tickets on the below!
