Young Winona drop their first track of 2022. With ‘Red Dress’, they’re back with an electrifying rock outfit.
Young Winona is a Los Angeles-based alt-rock band comprised of three New Zealand ex-pats Cassie Gaffaney (vocals/guitar), Geoff Maddock (bass), and Nick Gaffaney (drums).
In their music, the trio combines distinct guitar styles and skillful songwriting with an industrial edge to create a raw and noisy rock sound. And what a sound that is!
‘Red Dress’ delivers raw but wonderfully catchy sonic waves. It’s jam-packed with energy – from relentless drums to a throbbing, wild bass to gritty and jangling guitar to a cutting-edge riff. The continuous beat of the verse powerfully erupts in the chorus. You can clearly hear the band’s fondness for bands such as Blur and Nirvana on that track.
Cassie’s alto voice is strong, direct, and underpins the instrumental composition of the song. The lyrics are honest and straightforward just like her.
A great music video directed by Ed Shiers accompanies the song. Simple yet starring, the video captures every ounce of energy the band puts into playing that song. I love the contrasting colour play of Cassie’s red blazer and her polar white guitar.
Young Winona’s energy transforms into captivating and exhilarating rock sounds filled with raw emotion but straight from the heart. We are eager to hear more from them in the future. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
