Having left a strong first impression at the start of the year with their debut EP Mirror Flexing Jaw, Kyoto Kyoto return from places unknown to deliver new single ‘Trier’. The London act have emerged as one of the most memorable acts around and ensure that reputation is kept as the year closes out.
As to be almost expected now, Kyoto Kyoto always bring the unexpected. With over five minutes of space to play with, this new single is a shifting entity that heads down any and all roads. Written about the plight of the once great city, it captures all of the self-destructive choices that led to its downfall.
The intro aims to punish the ears as thick walls of noise fall out of the airwaves. Filling the room with distorted riffs and hellacious drums. Mantra-esque vocals coolly deliver messages detailing the death of various artforms that only add to the uneasy nature of the song. All while the vocals sound composed in bringing the facts to the ears, the instrumental thrashes about in different genres, bringing flurries of melodies and sections that rattle the brain.
Dabbling in a blend of kraut-inspired progressive rock, ‘Trier’ is unlike anything we’ve heard this year. It is hell on the ears, but what a listen it is. Kyoto Kyoto’s debut year has offered some of the most original material around and a solid foundation that could easily be built upon. Who knows what this group will bring next, all we know is that it will be worth the wait.
