The spooky sounds of deep tan are back, and they’re just as eerie as their previous releases. ‘hollow scene’ is the latest track from the trio hailing from the swamps of East London (self-quoted from the band), and after the splash the band made with ‘deepfake’, it sounds as though ‘hollow scene’ will be doing the same.
deep tan are quickly becoming synonymous with a slow, luring yet stalking sound intertwined with unique guitar riffs and soft vocals. The song maintains the same pace throughout with no real build-up, but this just adds to the overall horror feeling of the track. This combined with the fact musically it’s quite raw and stripped to the bare bones just adds to the whole effect.
The band explain “Hollow Scene is about the feeling of having to move through life with a certain level of detachment in order to function. Gatekeeping empathy for the sake of an easy life, if you will. It’s a pretty draining business, though, and can make any real search for meaning feel futile. Meursault was wrong and he was right. Robert Smith, however, is always right.”
Since 2020 deep tan have been one of the acts I’ve been keeping an eye out for and this song is the exact reason why. There’s something different about the trio which isn’t heard in most bands, their approach to songs and the way their crafted is different, and I simply cannot take my ears off it.
This track will feature on their upcoming debut EP Creeping Speedwells which is released June 4th on Practise Music.
