Fräulein – Pedestal / ep review

After blowing our minds in March with ‘Pet’, Punk duo Fräulein return with their new EP, Pedestal. Usually, I’d say it’s best not to put many things on a pedestal, but when it comes to these two, you absolutely should. Having been handpicked to join Nova Twins and Big Joanie on tour this year, it seems like now is an exciting time to be a fan. Hop on that bandwagon, we’re going for a ride!

Kicking off with the lead single, ‘Pet’ still manages to sound as rugged and angry as it did all those months ago. In the context of the EP, I like that it eases the listener into its world before letting loose with noise. It ties nicely into ‘Three’, which has an unsettling quality to it that builds and builds into another trademark riff that fills the room.

‘Big Cool’ follows the formula of starting off small but does a great job at sustaining the tension throughout. Fräulein manage to keep control of the instrumental enough to keep it flowing nicely without too many outbursts of energy, before finally allowing it to fully erupt. The unhinged nature really makes it feel unpredictable and like it would be a joy to hear live.

Pedestal is a solid EP. It’s an EP that focuses on what it does well, and that’s build energy and provide satisfying payoffs throughout. I feel like it will make up a lot of Fräulein’s setlists as each song sounds designed with a live audience in mind. It is great and comes at a promising time for the duo, so it’s exciting to see where they’ll go next.
