Grandmas House – Grandmas House / Debut EP

Grandmas House are back with their debut, self-titled EP. My anticipation for it has been building ever since hearing ‘Always Happy’ at the start of the year, and I’m so glad it’s finally out. ‘Always Happy’ is a single I still turn to for when I wanna get ANGRY and CONFIDENT.

Barely clocking above the ten-minute mark, Grandmas House comes with five tracks determined to showcase more of that intense energy, and it certainly leaves a mark. The drawn-out intro of ‘Golden’ sets the tone perfectly – a brooding mood that erupts with the help of battered drums and vocals that howl into the bones. It’s a great way to kick things off.

‘Girl’ follows with more fuzzy guitars and a bassline that seems to be embedded into the depths laying the foundation before the energy picks up. Once again the vocals do battle for supremacy as they argue with one another against the chaotic instrumental. ‘Never Out Of Luck’ adds a touch of swing to the mix as the basslines swivel the hips for a second before the guitars dominate the airwaves with some serious fuzz. I get some ĠENN vibes from it, although the ongoing collision of vocals makes it much more DIY sounding.

Grandmas House is a superb EP. The Bristol trio have delivered something that leaves no time for hesitation, opting to pull you into its hellacious world and force you to find your feet. I really like how the vocal duties are switched throughout. It really helps make it a true Punk record. The speed of ‘Feed Me’ alone is going to help with my running times, and ‘Pasty’ is easily one of the best closers of the year. It is an exhilarating listen, and a lot of the songs are no doubt going to be replayed over and over again.
