Not long after ‘Hate Me First’ comes ‘I’m So Revealing’, the new single from Lauren Hoyle. Written about the delicate juggling act of having to be more open whilst battling against the ensuing anxiety that comes with that, this is another massive song from Lauren that fills the room with more earworm-y goodness.
Much like ‘Hate Me First’, there are so many different parts to ‘I’m So Revealing’ to get obsessed with. Instrumentally it hits hard with thick melodies noodling right into the ear, as well as battering the drums with mammoth walls of noise for the chorus. The grittiness fits the tension that lives in the lyrics, as Lauren offers little insights into her thinking “did I leave the light on or miss my best friend’s birthday? I’m not sleeping” as she treads the line between sharing too much and too little. Personally, I think the hesitation in divulging details makes the song more relatable, and it helps that it rocks so hard too.
With her debut EP Fun out in September, I can’t wait to hear it. ‘I’m So Revealing’ is a great track and one that features so many reasons to return to it over and over again. Big up Lauren Hoyle. We also had the pleasure of talking to Lauren about the new single as well as other vital information such as her plans for the rest of the year and her favourite fruit.
“It’s strange, because I want to be more transparent, but I also notice the way people are intrigued by the mystery and it just makes them want more. I’m So Revealing plays with that see-saw between the two”
Congrats on the release of ‘I’m So Revealing’! What can you tell us about the new single? “This track is about not being a very open person and the anxieties that come with that. Feeling like you owe people more of yourself but not being able to give it up. But also the very act of withholding information whether it’s voluntarily or not makes people even more desperate for it, so the song kind of plays on that too.”
Is there a fine line between revealing too much or too little about yourself when it comes to songwriting? “For me personally this is something I have struggled with before, blaming other people for my own creative restrictions. But in truth I just realised it was me that was holding myself back. Writing this EP was such a freeing and cathartic thing for me and I think my music has benefitted so much from allowing myself to be open and laying it all out there, whether that’s lyrically or the emotional performance on the vocal…it all counts to the listener!”
It’s the second single to come from your upcoming EP Fun. Both tracks have been pretty loud and gutsy. Is this the sound we should expect to hear from the EP? “Absolutely! But there is also a couple of slower and less angsty tracks to get stuck into!”
What are your plans for the rest of the year? “I am doing an Instagram live stream regular slot for a couple of months called ‘Hoyle’s Home’ every other Wednesday. So I’m looking forward to getting friends together on that. I’ve also got a couple of gigs lined up which I’m excited for, and I will be busy writing new songs. But I’m also really looking forward to catching up with friends and family this summer, lockdown was a long old slog ay!”
Who are you currently listening to? “I am so obsessed with Self Esteem’s new track, I’ve always been a fan but this new song is next level and the lyrics are so relatable! Also St. Vincent’s new album is on repeat, she is amazing!”
Finally, what’s your favourite fruit? “It’s too difficult to answer. Personally I would split this into two categories.. every day fruit and luxury fruit. So my fave everyday fruit would have to be a Nectarine- eating one as I type I kid you not! Luxury fruit – the humble Mango! But hey I may have just broken the rules there ha!”
