Pacific – ‘Spiral’ / New Single

Manchester band, Pacific, first graced us with their piano-infused variation of modern rock back in 2017; they offered a new and compelling take on the genre. Since then, they’ve released numerous singles, accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams and featured on national radio.

Today they dropped ‘Spiral’, their 3rd single of the year – and their 14th in total – and with it, they have demonstrated their eagerness to develop their sound. Their previous release, April’s ‘Alibi’, seemed to point in the direction of this latest effort in that it featured a similar focus on the track’s powerful and arching chorus. The new track not only inherits its grandeur from its predecessor, but builds on it too. Anthony Orzel’s soaring vocal doesn’t waste any time in announcing the track’s presence and succeeds in elevating the band’s sound to new heights. The complex, layered instrumentation plays its part too, and provides the vocal with the perfect backdrop; often pushing the track’s sound into post-rock territory.

There are a number of musical elements on display on the track and it is, of course, natural that any rock band that formed this side of 2000 with a piano in it will likely be compared to Muse. Such influence is indeed displayed on the track, but it’s far from derivative and stops well short of sounding imitative. There appears to be an amalgamation of influences that range from Linkin Park to Mogwai and, for one or two brief moments, Bring Me The Horizon are also flickered across the musical palette.

’Spiral’ seems to have given Pacific sound a significant push towards finding their niche sound and, given that the band seem to be going from strength to strength, there’ll be many people who can’t wait to see what’s next.
