Sister Lucy returns with her debut EP, Big Girl Pants. We’ve featured the project of Abi Sinclair a lot over the last few months – she might even be the artist we’ve raved about most this year – but we cannot get enough of her slice of grunge. Having launched singles that still remain deep in the mind to this day, it was pretty hard to not get excited for this EP. Fortunately, it’s anything but pants.
Written about the woes of growing up and everything that comes with that – Big Girl Pants is an insight into an individual’s life while also sounding pretty darn relatable too. We’ve all had to put on our big girl pants at some point – I no longer do it after being caught by my Dad one time – so this is an EP for everybody. Kicking off with ‘Best At Being Sad’, it eases us into the sound of gritty guitars and soaring vocal hooks to envelop us in its world without us really noticing. It makes for a great start.
‘Dream’ follows with an upbeat set of drums that add some snap to the step. Tricking you into believing that everything’s okay before allowing the lyrics to seep some existential crisis into the brain. The guitars drive with angst and direction, but nothing hits as hard as “I only wanted to be wanted, to be good enough”. Oh man. “She Loves To Hate” follows with a more sombre pace as it dissects the relationship of a former friend. Despite the mood, the track comes packed with vocal hooks that makes even “the truth is you never really liked me” sound catchy.
Big Girl Pants is a superb EP. Sister Lucy has rounded off a fantastic debut year. From making a big first impression to becoming someone we feel we’ve known for years. This is a late contender for EP of the year for me, and I’ll be wandering to the off-kilter groove of ‘Big Kid’ for ages.
