Spilt Milk Society are one of the most underrated bands to come out of Birmingham in the last five years. With tracks like ‘She tastes like Summer’, ‘Turtleneck Boy’ and ‘Amsterdam’, they should be on tips of everyone’s tongues when talking about the Birmingham independent scene. However, due to a series of line-up changes, it feels like the band never really go their feet under the table.
However, now being based in Liverpool and a fresh line up, including the lead singer from Sugarthief, the band look to have finally settled! Earlier this year they released ‘Bon Iver’, which was a welcomed listen after their last release in 2018 with ‘Turtleneck Boy’.
To keep on top of that momentum, the band have released a follow in ‘Brunch‘, which is extremely tasty. Spilt Milk Society have always had a bit of a different style to them when compared with other bands in Brum, and this is a good showcase of that. The sleek track is a wonderous listen as the band ebb and flow in terms of pace and sound. The song is so well put together, there’s some subtle musical elements which drift in and out, and it never comes across as jarring. It all seems to blend so well together, and with Harry’s soft vocals across the top – it goes so well on a chilled morning.
The track reminds me of Gengahr’s latest musical efforts, with everything coming across so peaceful, but with the tendency pick up and take you by surprise. So happy to see Spilt Milk Society back, and I hope they can put some more new material out before year end, with the hope of seeing the, live next year!
