‘The Tooth, The Gap and the Filling’ is the new single from the brilliantly named Torture and the Desert Spiders. It, alongside ‘if you go, then I go’, are the first two tracks to come from the trio’s upcoming EP – set for release early next year. The song title could also be used as a nightmarish reboot of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Imagine that.
With a steady sense of instability, ‘The Tooth…’ is one of the most thrilling listens of the year. Kicking off with a barrage of gritty basslines and rolling drum beats, the song moves off at an immediate sprint. Leaving the listener in its dust. The result is a thrilling chase that drops hooks as soon as they’re found, such as the momentary harmony that slips by in a flash. The vocal performance from Torture (Anna Kunz) is equally unhinged, spiralling into a fast-paced set of lyrics that are incomprehensible but brilliant all the same.
Torture and the Desert Spiders caught attention with their name and have quickly become a new favourite. ‘The Tooth…’ is nothing but pure chaos. Spiralling out of control at the best of times. It is also complimented wonderfully by the acoustic ‘if you go, then I go’, which highlights how good Torture and co are with slower songs too.
