Voodoo Bandits – ‘I’m A Loser’ / New Single

After becoming bored with playing long cover sets in local pubs on the Isle of Man, Voodoo Bandits took matters into their own hands back in 2019, when they decided that playing their own material was their true goal.

It was 2019 that saw the band release their debut single, ‘Sink Below’, which first showcased the band’s punk-inspired indie rock sound. Since then, all the band’s singles – of which there are 5 – have all been shorter in length, and only one of them has breached the 3-minute-barrier. This goes a long way in showcasing the band’s adoption of the ‘do it fast’ ethos of punk rock.

Of course, the second part of that slogan is ‘do it loud’ and their latest single, I’m a Loser’ (released 11/06/21) makes a point of fulfilling that part too. Though the track bares the same title of an early Beatles track, they could not be further apart in terms of sound.

The track is their first release of 2021 and, in many ways, it picks up where the band left off. It features snappy, infectious guitar lines that bare the influence of pop-punk bands like Green Day and Blink 182 and the drums do well in providing the song with its punch. The lyrics are equally as engaging and come from the same vain as The Wombats’ ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’ in that they seem to celebrate the imperfections of life. The catchy nature of the vocal performance, coupled with the fact that the track runs for only 2 minutes and 41 seconds, ensures that repeated listens are a given.

Though brief, the track provides a shot in the arm for followers of the band who will, undoubtedly, be left wanting more, which is exactly what will keep them coming back.
