There’s nothing quite like a debut single. There’s just something cool about an artist releasing their first piece of work into the world, and giving the listener an insight into them. Wynona is one of the latest artists to take the plunge, with ‘Get Back To Myself’. Starting out in a studio apartment in the centre of Osaka, Japan, Wynona crafts their music, with pop at the heart of it.
‘Get Back To Myself’ has a real laid-back feel to it, with the patient strums of the guitar and chilled vocals. You can lay back on the sofa with this one, with no fear of anything being remotely in your face. Apart from the beautiful breakdown, which is bright and vibrant, lifting the track up.
Wynona sings about being homesick while living in Japan, missing aspects of home which is plainly spelled out in the lyric; “I just can’t wait / to get back to myself”, while also reminiscing of certain aspects of home that they’re pining for. A topic we can all relate to, making the song understandable for most and resonate with.
As debuts go, this one has done it’s job. Going forward, the Dead Good gang will be keeping up to date with Wynona and their new releases! Sometimes with debuts, I think some people can overthink it and perhaps put too much in musically, just to showcase their full range. Yet, Wynona knew exactly how much production the song needed, and wasn’t scared to leave it bare in places because it was perfect without all the bells and whistles.
Superb – bring on the next one!
