I had to remind myself that it was back in 2019 when Calva Louise released their debut album Rhinoceros, an album I still feel very fondly of, even today. We’re now in 2021, and Calva Louise are still producing invigorating music, while pushing their own boundaries. The trio are back with their latest track ‘Other Self’, which is the follow up track from their earlier 2021 release ‘Tiranito’ (which was gorgeous).
Since Calva Louise released their POPURRI EP back in 2020, the band has certainly had a musical shift. With everything sound much more sonically charged, and intensified, which can be heard in the latest release. The guitars are urgent, and at times panicked, raising the stakes of the overall track. Then when you add the calming, unique voice of Jess Allanic, you get this sci-fi gloss on it, and it’s so good.
The musicality of the track is abrasive, with all instruments seeming to be travelling at 180mph. We’re then treated to this delicious guitar solo. It screeches and squeals in the midst of Jess’s harmonies, as the blend so well together.
Since starting out, Calva Louise have been consistently brilliant. They refuse to rest on their laurels, as they continue to push their own boundaries further and further. This very much feels like a very new chapter in the bands relatively short book so far, but this shift just makes them all the more eye catching. Cannot wait to see what all of these new releases are building up to, hopefully another album!
