Peakes – ‘An Infinite Divide’ / New Single

Peakes are back with their first single of the year and my new favourite ‘An Infinite Divide’. Written about the power of social media and how it makes us feel we need to create a separate reality that only shows us at our “best selves”, it’s a song that’s big enough to tackle that issue. Rather than come prepared with hatred towards it, it chooses to be itself instead. Providing the perfect space for everybody to go and enjoy themselves. Perfect.

“The infinite divide is the chasm that grows between our real selves and our projected selves when we choose to exist online. In the song we question our need to condense our lives into show reels and flattering narratives and what affect that has on our relationships and our ability to connect with others.”

Having delivered a more polished sound for their last EP Pre Invented World, the trio have opted towards a grittier vibe for their new track. While there is a noticeable grit in its roots – and within the anthemic sound itself – the song still retains a lot of the lushness that made their music so accessible. Part of its charm is how quickly it gets into its groove. The intro takes a short breath before falling straight into the infectious instrumental.

The shimmering synths wash over you like a kaleidoscope of colour, dazzled by the soar of the harmonies and melodies. It has this wonderful quality to surprise you as it hits the next level. Just when you think it couldn’t get any bigger, the song then hits you with more synths and drums, becoming gargantuan for its wonderful finale. Honestly, it blows me away.

This is the first song from Peakes I’ve heard, and in the time since I’ve become obsessed with their music. ‘An Infinite Divide’ is a wonderful song. It’s so freeing, danceable, and straight up anthemic. I love it.
